What’s Really In Your Food?
When you buy a product, if you want to know what the ingredients are, it makes sense to simply read the label, right? Wrong! It is not so simple when it comes to finding out whether or not the ingredients used are genetically engineered. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer for Americans because it is not required that genetically engineered foods are listed. In fact, every country in the EU, Japan, as well as fifty countries in total, with over 40% of the world population mandate labeling of GMO’s. So, why isn’t the United States on board leading the pack? Basically because the corporations who benefit from the sale of GMO’s can continue to increase their market share primarily because consumers have no way to tell whether or not the products they buy contain ingredients that have been genetically engineered. Without labels we won’t know what is genetically engineered and what is not. Soon everything will be contaminated.

The question really should be,"What's IN this bottle?" Are the ingredients GMO or GMO free? GMO labeling is not mandatory. Only the manufacturer knows.
Organic CANNOT Co-Exist With GMO’s!
The chemical boys are doing everything within their power to sway the USDA to deregulate genetically modified crops. What is the big deal about this? Inevitably all organic crops will be contaminated by the genetically modified crops , rendering it impossible to sustain organic agriculture. According to Percy Schmeiser, the Canadian canola farmer who beat Monsanto in a landmark victory, “organic cannot co-exist with genetically modified crops.”
The Impact on Honeybees
This issue is not just about growing GM crops but the combination of GM crops combined with the new breed of systemic pesticides which are devastating to all pollinators and the wider environment. According to bee advocate, Tom Theobald (who you may recall leaked the infamous document from the EPA about the failure of Clothianidin to qualify for registration) “GM crops pose a threat to the honeybees because of the systemic pesticides which they introduce into the environment.”
Consumers Have The Right To Know!
If more people knew what was in their food and the negative impact GMO’s cause, they would not spend their dollars purchasing products that contained genetically modified ingredients. So what can consumers do about this? Starting this weekend, between October 1st and October 16th, marchers from across the country will be walking from New York City to the White House, demanding labeling of all Genetically Engineered Foods, in what has come to be called the GMO Right2Know march. This event seeks to raise national awareness and create pressure in the 2012 election cycle for politicians to take positions and enact legislation requiring Genetically Engineered foods to be labeled. In many ways this march is the beginning of a new broad-based movement for GMO labeling.
Industry leaders and activists such as David Bronner, President of Dr. Bronner’s, Dr. Vandana Shiva, Philosopher and Environmental Activist, Frances Moore Lappe and Anna Lappe of the Small Planet Institute, Percy and Louise Schmeiser, Theresa Marquez of Organic Valley, Michael Funk of United Natural Foods, Inc., Andy Kimbrell of the Center For Food Safety, Author, Sara Snow, Dr. Alan Greene, Pediatrician and Author, Megan Westgate of the Non-GMO project are some of the speakers that will be participating in this historic event.

About David Bronner:
David graduated from Harvard ’95 with a degree in Biology. Dr. Bronner’s makes bar and liquid soap and other personal care products certified under the USDA National Organic Program, with all major ingredients also from certified Fair Trade sources. He manages all of Dr. Bronner’s R&D in developing their National Organic Program certified personal care. Growing up he worked for his father Jim Bronner both in overseeing Dr. Bronner’s soap manufacture as well as Jim’s other company, Bronner Chemical and Technical Consulting, which involved specialty chemical and personal care product development. That experience gave David a grounding in synthetic surfactant and emulsifier based products. Among other things his father developed the fire-fighting foam concentrate for Monsanto (WD 881) used by the Forest Service and fire departments around the country. When not caught up in organic or other drama, he enjoys spending time with his wife Kris Lin-Bronner and wonderful 14 yr old daughter Maya.

June… rockin it with the GMO info. Always providing interesting and informative content to make the world more organic. Should be a great show….
Did I just say rockin?
Wow! The things I don’t know are on a daily increase. I will be sure to tune in!
Thanks for this great info, June! I never thought about the fact that -hello!- GMO cannot be organic. If organic means that something is fit to eat based on how natural and close to creation it is, but a food has been modified away from its original fitness, how is that organic!?!
It’s the beginning of a long road ahead but an important step!
It’s about time people are speaking up about this!
Most people don’t know what the difference between a gmo and an organic food is. I bet they know who J Lo is but have no idea what is in Sweet N Low. Go figure
The lies MUST stop! We need clarity in our food labeling!
Came up somewhat odd in my droid, but loved the post. Fantastic things.
Support GMO-labeling! Thanks for writing this! Loved the show!
People need to get involved! Way to go!
Why didn’t the news pick this up?
Just another reason I’m glad I started growing my own organic fish and vegetable with aquaponics
