Why Spend When You Can DIY!

It is that time of the year again when people are scrambling not only to find the perfect gift but are also trying to outdo last year’s festivities. This year, it is especially hard to buy anything with the economy being as weak as it is. However, there are so many great gifts you can make in your own kitchen! If you can boil water, you can definitely make hand crafted gifts that are sure to please all of your friends and family. The best thing about it is you can control what ingredients you use to keep it simple and keep it green!

1. Bath Bombs and Bath Fizzies

My notes: The basics of what makes bath bombs work is a reaction between 2 parts sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to 1 part citric acid.  From there the options are limitless.  However in all the teaching I do I stick to no fail formulas because bath bombs are notoriously fail.  They can be effected by too much humidity in the air and even not enough humidity.  They can go wrong if the wind blows wrong, if you put in too much or too little witch hazel.  I don’t want to set anyone up for failure with bath bombs and bath fizzies so I stick to no fail formulas.  In this economy who wants to waste supplies and I know I’m too busy to waste time so I assume you are too.

How I accomplish no fail is by using hard butters to act as a cement in my formulas.  I play with ratios to find the right mix depending on the purpose of the formula.  I’ve done super buttery ones that are meant to coat your skin and others that just have enough to hold it together with added ingredients.  This week is a good example of that.  I made Detoxifying Benin

Recipes:

Chocolate Butter Bath Bombs Recipe

Ingredients:
.495 lbs Citric Acid (8 oz)
.565 lbs Sodium Bicarbonate (9oz)
.25 lbs Natural cocoa Butter (4 oz)
.01 lbs Sweet Orange EO (.16 oz)

Detoxifying Bentonite Bath Fizzies Recipe

Ingredients:

2 cups sodium bicarbonate 15.14 ounces by weight
1 cup citric acid 6.78 ounces by weight
2 tablespoons bentonite clay 0.48 ounces by weight
1.4 ounces Kokum Butter by weight
1 tablespoon of Cleanse Essential Oil Blend 0.42 ounces by weight

No Fail Foaming Bath Bombs

Ingredients:

1 cup Citric Acid (7.4 ounces)
2 cups Sodium Bicarbonate (17.3 ounces)
¼ cup of Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (1.6 ounces)
¼ cup Cream of Tartar (1.4 ounces)
½ cup melted Deodorized Cocoa Butter (3.2 ounces)
1 tsp Laurel Leaf (0.12 ounces)

1. Reed Diffusers

My Notes: 6 parts Dipropylene glycol to 4 parts essential oil.

Dipropylene glycol is produced as a byproduct of the manufacture of propylene glycol. It works well as a solvent of essential and fragrance oils. Dipropylene glycol is not acutely toxic by oral, dermal, or inhalation exposure. Dipropylene glycol is not toxic to genetic material based on in vitro and in vivo study findings.

Dipropylene glycols low toxicity and solvent properties make it an ideal additive for perfumes, reed diffusers and skin and hair care products. It is also a common ingredient in commercial fog fluid, used in entertainment industry smoke and haze machines.

Recipes:

Square Reed Diffuser with Citrus Recipe

Ingredients:
1/2 cup plus 2 Tablespoons Dipropylene Glycol
1/4 cup Lime Essential Oil
1 Tablespoon Litsea Essential Oil
3 Tablespoons Orange 5 Fold Essential Oil

Directons:  Pour into Square Diffuser Bottle, add reeds and use.

Round Reed Diffuser with Well Being Essential Oil Blend
1/2 cup Dipropylene Glycol
1/4 cup plus 3 Tablespoons of Well-Being Essential Oil Blend

1. Massage Oils and Massage Butters

Massage oils are some of the easiest products you can make at home.  Simply chose your favorite carrier oils and start blending.  Essential oils can be added at 1-5% in massage oils.

Some of my favorite carrier oils include for massage include:  Fractionated Coconut Oil, Meadowfoam and Jojoba Oil – because they never go rancid.  I also like Olive Oil for the great slip it has and Grapeseed Oil because it is one of the “driest” oils.

You can also use butters for massage.  My favorites include shea butter and some of our newest butters including: bitter almond oil, capsicum butter, carrot butter, coffee butter, jasmine butter, rosemary butter, tamanu butter and vanilla butter!

Massage bars are simple to make and nice to use.  They make nice gifts as well.  You simply need a soap mold or massage bar mold.

1. Bath Salts, Soaks and Powders

Ingredients:

4 cups of Solar Salt (by weight 37.2 ounces)
2 cups of Pink Himalayan Salt (by weight 19.5 ounces)
1 tsp of Fractionated Coconut Oil
1 tsp of Triple Distilled Peppermint Essential Oil (1%)

For every 1 ounce,Use 1% use or 4-5 drops.

2. Lip Balms

Lip Balm from Scratch Recipe

Ingredients:
¾ cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (2.85 ounces by weight)
3 tablespoons of Meadowfoam Oil (1.25 ounces by weight)
8 tablespoons Beeswax Prills (2.85 ounces by weight)
.05 ounces (weight) Mango Butter

Microwave for 3 minutes and then add

1 teaspoon of Vitamin E (2.85 ounces by weight)
1 tablespoon Grapefruit Essential Oil (about 3%)

Pour, clean up and label!  It is that easy!

1. Body Mists, Cologne or Perfume

Making Perfumes 101

Making perfume is very easy.  You can blend your aroma from scratch or use essential oil blends.

You can you a wide variety of percentages of essential oil in perfumes, Eau de parfum, Eau de toilette and colognes.  I like to start at the lowest percentage and build from there.

Body Mist 1-3% Essential Oil or Fragrance Oil

Perfume: 20%-40% essential or fragrance oils
Eau de parfum: 10-30% essential or fragrance oils
Eau de toilette: 5-20% essential or fragrance oils
Eau de cologne:  2-5% essential or fragrance oils

Blending Notes for your Perfume Blend
Base Notes 45-55% of blend
Middle Notes 30-40% of blend
Top Notes 15-25% of blend
