When It Comes To Neonicotinoids, Is Anyone Listening?

What Definition Of Immediate Did They Mean?

It has been a few months since the White House announced the big news that a task force to protect pollinators would be created. This was back on June 20, 2014.

Presidential Memorandum — Creating a Federal Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators

“Pollinators contribute substantially to the economy of the United States and are vital to keeping fruits, nuts, and vegetables in our diets. Honey bee pollination alone adds more than $15 billion in value to agricultural crops each year in the United States. Over the past few decades, there has been a significant loss of pollinators, including honey bees, native bees, birds, bats, and butterflies, from the environment.

The problem is serious and requires immediate attention to ensure the sustainability of our food production systems, avoid additional economic impact on the agricultural sector, and protect the health of the environment.”

So, when will immediate action occur? The world may never know.

Neonicotinoids, The New DDT!

Tom Theobald has been advocating the severe impact of neonicotinoids and compared them to DDT. He stated, “neonicotinoids are 5,000 to10,000 times more toxic than DDT. So, what I did was I took that 3.4 million pounds, multiplied it times 5,000, which is a conservative estimate of the toxicity of these neonicotinoids. Those 3.4 million pounds have the toxic equivalent of 17.5 billion pounds of DDT! The peak usage of DDT was in 1959; 80 million pounds! We are now drenching American farmland with the equivalent of 17.5 billion pounds of DDT!”

    • The US government has been hijacked by giant corporations and we are living under an Oligarchy, so agency’s like the EPA and USDA are just extensions of these corporations with the blessing of congress. The bees are just getting in the way of profits. We are all screwed!

  1. This is so typical of how industry works. They kill off what is in nature to make artificial replicas for profit. That is why no one is listening.

  2. As a longtime environmental engineer for industry (leather tanning and others with extensive chemical usage and environmental impacts), I am amazed how little is being done regarding neonicotinoid insecticides in the US. With all of the other chemicals that have been strictly regulated to low limits due to lack of studies and lack of certainty (even when widely assumed to be less toxic alternatives), the precautionary principle has seemingly been thrown out the window lately. In the 1980’s and 1990’s I saw real progress being made in understanding the environmental aspects and impacts of many chemical products, but since that time due care has been traded for economic stimulation and speed to market. Let’s kill everything that stands in the way of profits via chemical-induced overwhelming anxiety, let everything else suffer with sub-lethal anxiety and prescribe some other little-tested chemicals to counteract anxiety in people for even more profits. Regulatory bodes have not even completed the initial objectives they set out to achieve over 40 years ago with regards to how chemical mixtures and exposures to multiple toxins affect organisms, and now every day these tasks get farther behind. It is what mankind incorrectly assumes to know that will destroy life as we know it. We need to be honest about what is known and what is not. We know honeybee colonies are essential and are dying. We do not know that neonicotinoids are safe, and we could know soon that they in fact are not safe. Let’s do the work to know. Until then, precautions are needed.
