Neonicotinoids -The Catastrophic Effects on Insects & Birds - Jun 04,2012

Dr. Henk Tennekes has been involved with cancer research for most of his career. His work regarding bees began after reading an official report to the Dutch Minister of Agriculture on the decline of bees. He was amazed at the lack of information on insecticides as a possible factor in the bee decline. Dr. Tennekes then began to research the impact of neonicotinoid insecticides such as imidacloprid and clothianidin. He discovered that they were identical to those of genotoxic carcinogens. These chemicals are not only affecting the honeybees but other species that are not closely monitored such as butterflies and other insects. He began to study the food habits of declining bird species and discovered that they depended on invertebrates. Dr. Tennekes is convinced that there is a link between the use of neonics and the decline of insects and birds. Some countries such as Germany have already banned the use of these chemicals. However, if these applications are not banned, there will be an impending environmental catastrophe that is irreversible. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer will speak to esteemed Toxicologist and author, Dr. Henk Tennekes, about his research and discuss this monumental devastation that will affect us on a global scale. Stay tuned!

Psychobabble: A Straight Forward, Plain English Guide to NLP - Jun 05,2012

Neuro-linguistic programming (or NLP) is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created in the 1970s. The title refers to a stated connection between the neurological processes ("neuro"), language ("linguistic"), and behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience ("programming") and can be organized to achieve specific goals in life. The founders of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, say that NLP is capable of addressing problems such as phobias, depression, habit disorder, psychosomatic illnesses, and learning disorders. Donna Blinston has done a magnificent job explaining what NLP is and how you can understand the what NLP is really all about. Psychobabble is a practical text book, written in plain English and broken down into bite size chunks so that all readers can follow and utilize the techniques of Neuro linguistic programming (NLP). After introducing what NLP is and how it originated, the NLP Diploma is then broken down into techniques organized by chapter. Each chapter then follows the same layout, further broken down giving a real world definition, the benefits, the history and/or science and real life examples of the technique. With the chapter finishing with practical exercises for the reader to learn and develop the technique further for themselves. Food Choices Matter! Eat To Defeat Menopause - Jun 07,2012

Every four minutes an American woman enters menopause and with an ever-increasing life expectancy rate, that woman can spend as much as one third of her life going through “the change.” However, despite the inevitability and importance of menopause in a woman’s life, the discussion of this challenging transitional period is often riddled with myths, uncertainties, and trepidation. In Eat to Defeat Menopause: The Essential Nutrition Guide for a Healthy Midlife—with 130 Recipes, Karen Giblin and Mache Seibel, MD, two of the nation’s top menopause experts, break down the most important, need-to-know facts about menopause, offer tips and advice for combating its symptoms, and provide healthy and enticing recipes guaranteed to satisfy every craving (or mood swing). Combining the latest research on menopause, traditions from their Italian and Jewish families, and recipes from chefs across the United States, Giblin and Seibel show that making simple changes to one’s lifestyle can, in many cases, be just as effective as combating menopausal symptoms with the latest drugs and surgeries. Some of these simple changes can include: Eating foods that contain phytoestrogens, such as soy and garlic, to combat hot flashes and insomnia Stabilizing mood swings by eating omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B Cooking with avocados, chocolate, asparagus, or chile peppers to improve a decreased sex drive Reducing alcohol intake to ward off headaches, hot flashes, insomnia, and mood swings Whether readers are personally experiencing the “change” or just want to arm themselves with information and healthful eating habits for the road ahead, Eat to Defeat Menopause provides an easy and delicious guide for achieving a healthy (and hot-flash-free) midlife. Stay tuned!

Eco Ola Project: A Model For Modern Agroecological Farming - Jun 11,2012

Sustainable agriculture is the practice of farming using principles of ecology, the study of relationships between organisms and their environment. Eco Ola is a farm located near Iquitos, Peru at the headwaters of the Amazon River that uses permaculture to produce food. Eco Ola's mission is to break the cycle of resource depletion and poverty plaguing the Peruvian Amazon through the implementation of permaculture in conjunction with the local communities. The destructive cycle starts with logging; uncontrolled slash and burn; followed by cattle grazing; then abandonment of the land for newly exploited areas. Towards this goal they have developed a polyculture system that includes a myriad of community staples such as yuca, bananas, and beans; regional crops: cocona, camote, peppers, achiote, and lemon grass; and the export crops sacha inchi and cacao. This diversity of crops mitigates yield and market risks while restoring degraded land and building community self reliance. Eco Ola understands the importance of proving that agroecological farming systems work and provide a real alternative to industrial farming. All of their design work is geared toward scalability and the inclusion of additional communities to turn the negative feedback cycles into positive ones. A key facet of this is providing people with access to healthy foods that are truly sustainable. Consumer choice can only be an agent of change when real alternatives are made available and people can make informed buying decisions. Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by special guest, the founder of Eco Ola, William Park, to talk about what it takes to create a truly sustainable farm while maintaining harmony with the community. Stay tuned!
