| + | |||
| + | The Karoo is the largest ecosystem in South Africa and is home to a fascinating diversity of life, all having adapted to survive an unforgiving landscape. Natural gas exploration has now come to invade this magnificent land in order to exploit its natural resources. A moratorium has been placed on granting exploration licenses to major fuel companies, which allows them to use hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, as a means to extract gas from the earth. Hydraulic fracturing is a drilling technique used to extract shale gas from deep underground. It involves pumping enormous volumes of water, sand and chemicals into horizontally drilled wells under great pressure to shatter the rock layer and release trapped gas. Jonathan Deal is the Chairman of the Treasure the Karoo Action Group (TKAG). He has led the campaign against hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo and recently won a court action requiring the Mineral Resources Minister to release the names of the task team assessing the pros and cons of fracking. Mr. Deal is also contesting claims that the Karoo would benefit from this development. Will the Karoo sustain environmental devastation from natural gas development? What are the risks to the water supply? Will the benefits that the industry claims be forthcoming? Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by special guest, Jonathan Deal, Chairman of Treasure The Karoo, to discuss this battle to protect the Karoo. | ||

Lisa Welko's Roadmap To 2012-Fitness Trends To Watch & Avoid - Feb 01,2012
Things have drastically changed in the fitness world since the 80’s when Olivia Newton John’s hit song, “Let’s Get Physical” debuted while the world danced along with Richard Simmon’s “Sweatin’ To The Oldies” accompanied by his Deal-A-Meal programs. Fitness clubs, classes and videos were popping up everywhere. Trends come and go but what it all boils down to is a new spin on how to keep fit and keep it interesting. Today, with all of the infomercials for equipment as well as the plethora of promos for weight loss products by former heavyset celebrities, it can be overwhelming not to mention expensive. Unfortunately, with all of the ad money spent on these types of “get slim quick” ads, there is still nothing that takes it to the next level, making it personal. However, there is one woman who takes her job seriously and the proof is in the fat free, organic, dairy and gluten free pudding! Lisa Welko, CEO of Ellipse Fitness the hottest, rapidly growing, innovative fitness and weight loss franchise club in the nation has not only been keeping up with the latest trends but has also been very busy creating them. In addition to being a fitness expert, Lisa is one of the leading fitness entrepreneurs in the USA. She really does take her job very seriously. When a club member doesn’t show up, her staff actually calls to see why they haven’t been able to work out. As a fitness innovator, Lisa has created a number of concepts that are not just mere trends but are becoming core components for fitness routines. So what are some of the trends Lisa has created? Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by Lisa Welko to talk about fitness trends for 2012!

Alice Shabecoff -The Toxic Scene Of The Crime - Feb 02,2012
Everyone knows, there is no place like home! After all, home is where the heart is. Home is where it is supposed to be comfortable and safe but could it be toxic? While most families think they are, more or less, safe in their homes, unfortunately, they are not. There are many toxins in our home environment that can and have caused harm to ourselves as well as our children. With the myriad of scented air fresheners, bath and beauty products, to the bottle of detergent you use to clean your floor, there are all sorts of chemicals that really should be avoided. Alice Shabecoff is an advocate who has been working diligently to raise awareness about the dangers of the chemical use in our environment as well as inside our own homes. She educates the public about how these toxic chemicals have impacted our health and what we can do about it. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer, talks to Alice Shabecoff to learn what you can do to protect yourself and your children from these toxic assaults in your home environment! Bio: Alice Shabecoff is co-author with her husband Philip of Poisoned for Profit: The Toxic Assault on our Children. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Birth Defect Research for Children. She served in the 1970s as executive director of the National Consumers League, the country’s oldest consumer organization, and in the 1980s as founder and executive director of the nonprofit Community Information Exchange, a nonprofit information service for the community development sector. Joel Salatin "Folks, This Ain’t Normal!" - Feb 03,2012
Thanks to decades of clever mass marketing campaigns, the average person has become completely disconnected with how our food is grown and also what real food should look like. With the agro-chemical companies chiming away that “there is going to be a food shortage if we don’t produce more food and decrease the world population in order for everyone to survive,” the reality is most people do not have a clue as to how their food is produced, where it is grown or how it is grown. Processed foods, initially created with the intention to save time, are simply not a healthy choice. Some of these processed, ready to “heat and serve” products made with “real chicken” are breaded, seasoned and disguised in all sorts of geometrical shapes so that children will be encouraged to eat them. Meanwhile, the average child who primarily consumes this type of food has no idea what a chicken looks like, sounds like or the fact that chickens are smart, loving beings. It takes a true organic farmer to really get the point across about the benefits of growing organics and eating organics. Joel Salatin is an organic farmer from Virginia who talks about the problems he sees not only as an organic farmer but as a consumer of organic foods. In hisbest-selling book, Folks, This Aint Normal: A Farmers Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better World he takes us into his world as he talks about how our food is produced and why we ought to take a closer look at where and how our food is produced. Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by special guest Joel Salatin!

Sylvia Bernstein: Feeding The World With Aquaponics - Feb 06,2012
With the growing demand for organic food production, more and more people are looking at sustainable models that will produce a high yield without necessarily having to farm a large acreage. One of the most popular methods is called aquaponics. Aquaponics is the cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, re-circulating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish wastes to plant nutrients. What is aquaponics gardening and how does it work? Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by special guest Sylvia Bernstein, President and Founder of The Aquaponic Source, Inc., the only company in the North America dedicated entirely to the home aquaponic gardener. Bio: Sylvia Bernstein is the President and Founder of The Aquaponic Source, the leading U.S. based company focused entirely on the home aquaponic gardener, and the author of “Aquaponic Gardening: A Step by Step Guide to Growing Fish and Vegetables Together”. She also runs the Aquaponic Gardening Community, the largest online community site dedicated to aquaponic gardening in North America, and is the U.S. Chapter Chairman of the Aquaponics Association. She teaches and speaks extensively about aquaponics and its exciting potential. In her recent past life Sylvia was the VP of Marketing and Product Development for AeroGrow International, the makers of the AeroGarden. She was one of the company’s original founders and was instrumental in developing the plant growth technology. Sylvia has a degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of California, Davis and an MBA from the University of Chicago.

Ruth Rogers Clausen: Coping with Deer - Feb 07,2012
Many home owners residing in rural areas are often struggling to keep their well manicured landscape from being devoured by deer. As a well respected expert, author, teacher and overall lover of nature, she has written a book that is essential for anyone trying to cope with deer. In her best-selling book, 50 Beautiful Deer-Resistant Plants: The Prettiest Annuals, Perennials, Bulbs, and Shrubs that Deer Dont Eat, you will learn how to have a successful garden in deer country. Michael Potter: GMO’s and Organic Sustainability - Feb 13,2012
According to the EPA, sustainability is defined as being based on a simple principle: everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations. Sustainability is important to making sure that we have and will continue to have, the water, materials, and resources to protect human health and our environment. Sustainability is a word often used by clever marketers to promote an agenda to address the propaganda that the overpopulated world is running out of food due. With conventional crops devastating the environment, it appears that all we are doing is mining the land instead of farming it sustainably. In essence, in order to be truly sustainable, agriculture must be perpetuated so it can be productive year after year and generation after generation. The privately stated policy from the agro-chemical companies is market domination through contamination, meanwhile it is translated for the public as peaceful co-existence, when in fact there is no peaceful co-existence. Is it possible for the organic producers to survive? Eden Foods, Inc., (also known as Eden Organic), is the oldest family owned organic food producer in the USA and the largest supplier of organic dry grocery items. Michael Potter, President of Eden Foods has been a strong advocate of organics and has also been a big supporter of the Non-GMO Project which is pushing for GMO Labeling. Conventional food producers currently do not have to label whether or not GMO ingredients are used in foods sold in the USA. Tune in as host, June Stoyer talks to Michael Potter, to discuss the true meaning of organic sustainability and impact of GMO’s on our food and environment.

Julia Lindsey: The Simple Choice of Joy & Abundance - Feb 14,2012
You have a choice in life to be either happy or miserable. It is up to you. Especially during tough times, sometimes, we all need a little inspiration and motivation. While there are many things people can use for inspiration, nothing more powerful than the written word. Books have the power to take your mind off your problems, heartache and fears, even if for a few brief moments. Books have been successfully utilized in co-dependency programs and other kinds of therapy. Julia Lindsey is the co-founder of Our Little Books which publishes an eclectic set of little books dedicated towards education and inspiration. For the past thirty years, Julia has been an Occupational Therapist, specializing in pediatrics and committed to developing the potential of individual students in the school system so each child can be successful. She touches many lives by using her personal experiences and expertise to help others grow. After four years of marriage and two babies, her commitment to personal development and faith in her own ability to achieve her dreams was certainly put to the test. Her husband was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and heart disease; he eventually had to give up a successful law practice and stay at home. As the couple struggled to juggle their finances, health issues, and growing children, they were living by default instead of deliberately. Even though Julia knew intellectually what she should do, she did not have role models to help her clarify her thoughts and apply those skills in a practical way to her own life. She managed to keep a positive attitude, but it took nearly fifteen years for her to find life balance and a sense of control in her life. From her own personal experience, she knows that there are many individuals who could learn to live a more fulfilling life if they knew that they could simply make a choice to do that. Her books, Joy is Simply a Choice and Abundance is Simply a Choice reflect that hard-earned wisdom.

LionAid.org Hosts Conference On Conservation Of African Lion - Feb 15,2012
In the 1960’s, there were over 200,000 lions in Africa. Now the population is down to less than 25,000; a decline close to 90% in just 50 years. LionAid.org dedicated to the conservation of lions, has been successfully working with members of the UK and EU Parliaments to address major issues contributing to the catastrophic lion population decline. While LionAid accepts that loss of habitat and co-existence issues with humans and livestock have been a major factor, they now consider that lion trophy hunting as a significant source of mortality that needs more stringent regulation. LionAid also recognizes that disease issues emanate from domestic animals continues to affect lions. As a component of their overall lion conservation plans, a conference will be held in Nairobi on March 29 and 30, 2012. This conference will enable forward-thinking range states to evaluate considered conservation programs for African lions to better ensure their future survival. Tune in as host, June Stoyer speaks to the founders of LionAid.org, Christine Macsween and to Dr. Pieter Kat.

Jim Gerritsen -The Significance of OSGATA v. Monsanto - Feb 16,2012
To what extent must organic farmers and growers go to in order to protect their businesses? If a farmer chooses to grow organically and is contaminated by the GMO technology, they may be sued for the contamination as a patent infringement. Is there anything they can do? The large group of 83 Plaintiffs in OSGATA v. Monsanto is comprised of individual family farmers, independent seed companies and agricultural organizations. The total number of members within the plaintiff group exceeds 300,000 and includes many thousands of certified organic farmers. The Plaintiffs are not seeking any monetary compensation. Instead, the farmers are pre-emptively suing Monsanto and seeking court protection under the Declaratory Judgment Act, from Monsanto-initiated patent infringement lawsuits Jim Gerritsen, Maine organic seed farmer and President of lead Plaintiff, Organic Seed Growers And Trade Association said, "our lawyer did a good job explaining the current injustice farmers face. We have a right to be secure on our farms and to be free from Monsantos GMO trespass. If we become contaminated by Monsanto, not only is the value of our organic seed crop extinguished but we could also be sued by Monsanto for patent infringement because their contamination results in our possession of their GMO technology. We have farmers who have stopped growing organic corn, organic canola and organic soybeans because they cant risk being sued by Monsanto. Its not fair and its not right. Family farmers need justice and we deserve the protection of the court." Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by special guest, Jim Gerritsen, to discuss this very important case.
