So, what exactly is aquaponics? It is not necessarily a new method but one that has been around for a very long time. Aquaponics is the cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, re-circulating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish wastes to plant nutrients. It is the only modern agricultural technique that isn’t dependent upon fossil fuels to be fully operational. This is an excellent subject and since I am new to it am learning quite a bit about aquaponics. I am a survivalist and have now added info on this subject to my site as well.
I LOVE the topic of aquaponics! I have tried so hard over the years to grow a successful full season organic garden but I am sure there is a neon sign hanging out in the woods written in ‘animal language’ that says my garden is open for business. This got me thinking that I needed to look into aquaponics! There are many fine dining establishments that use food grown from aquaponics and it does taste amazing. With this system I can grown ‘family food’ and just go out and plant animal food since they already have their table reserved.
This has ‘Fad’ written all over it. I hate the way people are trying to sell this idea to vegetarians – just because you don’t eat the fish. You still exploit the fish, they will still be living in unnatural conditions and many will be killed by the inexperienced, the inept and the ill-informed.

If you took a closer look at what aquaponics is about your would see clearly that this is not a “fad” and has been a method for growing food that has been around for centuries. The fish are not exploited whatsoever. In fact, they are being fed organically and are cared for.
Do not confuse aquaponics with hydroponics. Everything must be organic. In areas where the water is scarce and the environment has been contaminated, aquaponics is an excellent method for growing food. There are a number of vegans that use this method and embrace it because it is an excellent option, especially when resources are limited.

I am thrilled to finally find a website that deals in aquaponics. I’ve been wanting to try it. I don’t like eating fish but I do appreciate their contribution to my garden. Thanks so much!
I don’t agree with Jackie about it exploiting fish. I mean really? They are part of the food chain and anyone who goes to a great extent to use aquaponics, even the inexperienced, are going to research and learn about it first. Otherwise it would be a waste of money and time.
P.S. I’m a Prepper and I am always looking for other ways to prepare for the unexpected and I think this is an option especially now when parts of the Ohio Valley and Indiana are under severe drought conditions. Gardens are not thriving like they should be and the entire state of Indiana is under a state water shortage.
